The incident occurred near Jolfa, a city in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province, approximately 600 kilometers (375 miles) northwest of Tehran. At the time, Raisi was traveling in the region, which borders Azerbaijan.

Efforts to reach the crash site have been hindered by poor weather conditions, including heavy rain and wind, as reported by state TV.

Earlier on Sunday, Raisi had been in Azerbaijan to inaugurate a dam with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. This dam is the third constructed jointly by the two nations on the Aras River.

Iran operates a variety of helicopters, but international sanctions have made acquiring parts challenging. The country’s military air fleet predominantly consists of equipment from before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Ebrahim Raisi, 63, a hard-liner and former head of the judiciary, is considered a protégé of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Some analysts believe Raisi could succeed the 85-year-old Khamenei upon his death or resignation.
