Real Madrid's journey through the knockout stages was challenging. They topped their group with maximum points before narrowly defeating RB Leipzig 2-1 on aggregate in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, they faced defending champions Manchester City, with a 3-3 draw in the first leg followed by a 1-1 draw in the second, ultimately advancing on penalties.

For Dortmund, Mats Hummels was pivotal in their semifinal victory, scoring the only goal in the second leg in Paris and being named Player of the Match in both legs.
