Switzerland secured a 3-1 victory against Hungary, marking a strong start in Group A of Euro 2024.

They join Germany at the group's summit after Germany's 5-1 win over Scotland in the tournament's opening match.

Goals from Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer put Switzerland ahead by halftime. Hungary's Dominik Szoboszlai assisted Barnabas Varga to reduce the deficit, but Breel Embolo, returning after an injury-plagued season, sealed the win for Switzerland with a skillful chipped finish.

Duah, in his second game for Switzerland, scored the opener by shooting low past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, following a pass from Aebischer. Aebischer then doubled the lead just before halftime with a curling low shot from the edge of the box.

Varga's diving header in the 66th minute, off Szoboszlai's cross, gave Hungary hope and sparked celebrations among their hardcore fans. Despite maintaining pressure, Hungary couldn't find an equalizer. This match marked Hungary's first competitive loss since September 2022.

Switzerland now sits second in Group A, following host nation Germany's emphatic win over Scotland.
