The incident occurred on Tuesday during protests against the tenure of local government chairman, reigniting a long-standing conflict between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Wike.

Governor Fubara and Wike have been at odds since Fubara assumed office, with tensions easing briefly before flaring up again over the local government chairmen's tenure issue.

Governor Fubara had instructed the chairmen, who were supported by Wike, to vacate their positions due to the expiration of their tenure. However, the chairmen disobeyed this directive, citing a six-month extension granted by the Wike-aligned faction of the Rivers House of Assembly.

In a statewide address on Tuesday, Governor Fubara ordered all 23 local government chairmen to transfer their duties to the Heads of Administration in their respective councils.

In response to this directive, youths across the state, particularly in Obi Akpor where Wike once served as Chairman, erupted in protest. They dismantled the statue of Wike, chanting anti-Wike slogans and scattering the remnants
