The decision was endorsed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) Senate Caucus during plenary on July 17, following a voice vote by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Ndume's removal comes on the heels of his criticism of the Tinubu-led government, which sparked a backlash from the pro-Tinubu camp. Senator Sunday Karimi (Kogi West) and the APC condemned Ndume's statement as derogatory. In recent interviews, Ndume alleged that President Tinubu is inaccessible, claiming that some Ministers in the government lack access to the President.

The APC national leadership had earlier asked Ndume to resign his membership of the party and join any opposition party of his choice. This request was made in a letter signed by the party's national chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and Secretary, Barrister Ajibola Bashiru.

Senator Tahir Monguno has been appointed as the new Chief Whip, replacing Ndume. This development highlights the ongoing tensions and power struggles within the APC-led government.
