According to the bill, anyone found guilty of this offense shall face a fine of N5 million, a 10-year prison sentence, or both.

"We need to instill patriotism and respect for our national symbols," said Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, sponsor of the bill. "This legislation will ensure that Nigerians take our national anthem and pledge seriously."

The bill also stipulates penalties for destroying national symbols, defacing places of worship, and undermining the federal government. Additionally, it addresses illegal roadblocks, unauthorized traffic duties, and unlawful processions.

In May, President Bola Tinubu signed a bill reverting to Nigeria's old national anthem, "Nigeria, We Hail Thee," written by Lillian Jean Williams in 1959.

"We must respect our national heritage and symbols," President Tinubu said. "This bill is a step towards promoting unity and patriotism in our country."

The Counter Subversion Bill 2024 is set for its second reading, where its general principles will be debated.
