On the morning of Nigeria's 64th Independence Day, protesters gathered at various locations, including Ikeja Underbridge in Lagos, to demand reforms and express their dissatisfaction with current government policies.

The protest, part of the nationwide #FearlessInOctober movement, saw Nigerians coming together to challenge the economic hardships and poor governance many believe have worsened under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The protesters highlighted concerns over issues such as rising poverty, hunger, and unemployment, with civil society organizations leading the charge.

Despite warnings from authorities about maintaining order, the protesters remained resolute, insisting on their right to peaceful assembly as provided under Nigeria’s constitution.

The National Human Rights Commission urged security agencies to ensure that the protests remained peaceful and that participants were protected during the demonstration.

In response to the protests, law enforcement agencies increased their presence at strategic locations like Ikeja and other protest hubs across the country.

This was in a bid to avert any potential unrest, although they assured the public of their commitment to allowing peaceful protests while discouraging any form of violence.

The protests coincided with muted Independence Day celebrations, reflecting the widespread frustration among citizens with the current economic challenges and what many see as unfulfilled promises of progress.
