A woman from Iowa has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for faking a cancer diagnosis and soliciting donations for fake treatments on social media and the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe.

20-year-old Madison Russo was sentenced after it was discovered that she had never been diagnosed with cancer, despite her claim that she had pancreatic cancer and leukemia tumors around her spine. Russo admitted to fabricating the story in order to get attention from her family and others.

The truth came to light after medical professionals noticed inconsistencies in her story and helped police obtain her medical records.As a result of her fraudulent actions, Russo was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with the sentence being suspended on the condition that she does not commit any further crimes.

The first three years of the sentence will be monitored closely to ensure she stays out of trouble, and if she does, the remaining seven years will be suspended and she will not be required to serve time in prison.

In addition to the suspended sentence, Russo was also ordered to pay back the $39,000 in donations she received, as well as a fine of $1,370 and 100 hours of community service.
