A group of students from the School of Forestry in Ibadan, Oyo state, reportedly staged a protest at the Ibadan office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday, alleging that the agency had invaded their school and made some arrests.

It is alleged that EFCC agents broke into the school building to speak with the management before making some arrests. It is also alleged that students were shot in the confrontation with the EFCC agents.

In response, the EFCC stated that the students' attack on their personnel was unprovoked and denied making any arrests. The situation is currently under investigation.

According to a statement by EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale, the agency's personnel showed restraint in the face of provocation, and no shots were fired during the incident.

The spokesperson further denied reports of any shootings, and clarified that the bus used to transport operatives to the school was damaged by college students and staff who also hurled stones and potentially dangerous objects at the vehicle.

Oyewale concluded that the agency was currently investigating the incident to determine the full circumstances surrounding it.

The statement says:

The Commission wishes to assure the public that it will continue to perform its duties in line with its mandate, and unprovoked attacks against personnel of the Commission will no longer be tolerated.

“It is noteworthy that, operatives of the Commission exercised restraint in the face of the unprovoked attack and refrained from applying any force against the belligerent attackers. No student or staff of the college was shot, as armed operatives merely fired into the air to disperse the unruly crowd.

“A rescue team that came successfully released the seven operatives held hostage by the riotous crowd,”
