The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has rejected the newly appointed governing councils for Federal Government-owned polytechnics, citing that the appointees lack knowledge of the polytechnic system.

ASUP President, Shammah Kpanja, expressed dismay at the appointments, stating that the union has consistently called for the appointment of individuals with relevant experience in the sector, including former Rectors, Principal Officers, and Chief Lecturers.

However, the current list falls short, with none of these qualified individuals being appointed. The union views this as a continuation of discrimination against polytechnics and an attempt to push the sector into crisis.

ASUP has demanded that the list be reviewed before the inauguration to include individuals with the requisite knowledge of polytechnics, warning that failing to do so could lead to a crisis associated with poor governance.

This development comes 11 months after President Bola Tinubu's administration dissolved the governing councils of FG-owned universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, with a new list of council members unveiled on Saturday, signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Didi Walson-Jack.
