It is worth noting that Akinkunmi designed the Nigerian flag in 1959, during the tenure of Prime Minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. His design was selected from over 2,000 entries in a national competition.

Atiku Abubakar expressed his disappointment, saying: "It's a shame that the Federal Government has failed to give Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi the recognition he deserves. He designed our national flag, a symbol of our unity and identity, and yet he was denied a state burial. This is a clear indication of the government's lack of appreciation for our national heroes."

Atiku Abubakar's statement highlights the need for the government to acknowledge and honor the contributions of Nigerians who have made significant impacts on the country's history and development.

"Akinkunmi's legacy should be celebrated, not neglected," Atiku Abubakar added. "I urge the Federal Government to take immediate action to rectify this oversight and give Akinkunmi the recognition he deserves."

The former Vice President's call to action has sparked a conversation about the importance of honoring Nigeria's national heroes and recognizing their contributions to the country's development.
