The rescue operation took place during the baby's naming ceremony, where the police apprehended the couple and unravelled a complex web of child trafficking.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, the couple had paid N2,350,000 to acquire the baby from Loretta Nelson, a suspected child trafficker.

However, Nelson had initially purchased the baby from Pastor Peter Udoh for N1,450,000, who in turn had bought the child from another suspected trafficker, Gloria Sunday, for N500,000.

Sunday was arrested after the baby's mother reported the theft to the police on July 11, 2024. Following Sunday's arrest, she confessed to selling the baby and led the police to the other suspects involved in the crime.

Pastor Udoh was arrested in Ikene Town, Ogun State, and admitted to reselling the child to Nelson, who was later apprehended in Festac Town, Lagos.

In a stunning revelation, Hundeyin stated that Nelson confessed to selling the baby to Mr. and Mrs. Uwam for N2,350,000.

The couple was arrested during the naming ceremony, with Hundeyin quoting them as saying, "We paid N2.3m for the child."

The police have assured that investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be arraigned in court following the investigation.

This case highlights the disturbing trend of child trafficking in Nigeria and the need for continued vigilance and swift action by law enforcement agencies to combat this heinous crime.
