In response to the events in the Republic of Niger, the ECOWAS heads of state and government have released a statement calling for the immediate release and reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum.

The statement also rejects any claims that President Bazoum has resigned, reaffirming his legitimacy as president, as recognized by ECOWAS, the African Union, and the international community.

In addition to demanding the release and reinstatement of President Bazoum, the ECOWAS leaders have also strongly condemned the illegal detention of the president, members of his family, and members of his government.

They view this situation as a hostage situation, and hold the perpetrators of the attempted coup d'état fully responsible for President Bazoum's safety and security, as well as that of his family and government.

The leaders warned that if their demands are not met within one week, they will take all necessary measures to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.

In addition to their condemnation of foreign support for the coup attempt, the ECOWAS leaders also expressed appreciation to other governments and partners for their solidarity and support.

The summit, chaired by President Bola Tinubu, also announced immediate sanctions against Niger, including border closures, a no-fly zone, and the suspension of all commercial and financial transactions.

Additionally, all assets belonging to the Republic of Niger in the ECOWAS Central Bank and in commercial banks have been frozen.

Prior to the Summit, President Tinubu held bilateral meetings with President Embalo of Guinea Bissau, President Itno of Chad, and Michael Health, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of African Affairs.

In addition to President Tinubu, President Talon of Benin, President Ouattara of Côte d'Ivoire, President Barrow of The Gambia, President Sall of Senegal, President Gnassingbé of Togo, and President Embalo of Guinea Bissau attended the Summit in person.
