Edo Gubernatorial Election: APC’s Monday Okpebholo Declared Winner by INEC

In a closely watched electoral contest, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Monday Okpebholo, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the winner of the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election in Edo State.

Okpebholo triumphed in a highly competitive race, which featured 17 candidates vying for the governorship seat at the Dennis Osadebay House, Benin City.

The election, which took place across 4,519 polling units in all 18 local government areas of Edo State, was marked by intense competition.

Okpebholo faced strong challenges from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, and Labour Party’s (LP) Olumide Akpata.

Despite the stiff rivalry, Okpebholo's political acumen, combined with the support of influential figures such as former governor and Edo North senator Adams Oshiomhole, played a significant role in his eventual victory.

Okpebholo’s performance was particularly impressive, as he secured wins in key local government areas, including Esan West, Owan West, Egor, Akoko-Edo, Esan Central, Orhionmwon, and several others.

His ability to garner support from a wide range of voters in both urban and rural areas contributed to his commanding lead.

The governorship election was widely regarded as a test of strength for the major political parties in Edo State.

Okpebholo’s victory further cements the influence of the APC in the region, with analysts noting that his administration will be closely watched as he steps into the role of governor.

The outcome of the election marks a new chapter for Edo State, as Okpebholo prepares to lead the state amid high expectations for development and improved governance.
