EFCC's Dramatic Attempt to Arrest Yahaya Bello: Ex-Governor's Team Claims Harassment

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been accused of using strong-arm tactics to arrest former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.

EFCC's Dramatic Attempt to Arrest Yahaya Bello: Ex-Governor's Team Claims Harassment

According to Bello's Director of Media, Ohiare Michael, EFCC operatives stormed the Kogi Government Lodge in Asokoro on Wednesday night, September 18, shooting sporadically in an attempt to forcefully arrest the ex-governor.

Ohiare Michael condemned the attack, stating, "It has come to our notice that people suspected to be operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission are currently around the Kogi Government Lodge, AsokorQo, in an attempt to forcefully arrest former Governor Yahaya Bello. They were shooting sporadically."

He emphasized that the EFCC should be held accountable if anything happens to Bello, pointing out that the former governor had made himself available for interrogation earlier in the day.

Michael's statement further highlighted the perceived inconsistency in the EFCC's actions, noting that Bello was told to leave and return later after voluntarily visiting the EFCC office.

"Tonight's attack was needless, as the former governor made himself available to the EFCC in their office for interrogation.

The EFCC had no questions to ask Alh. Yahaya Bello in the morning, but suddenly, they are out to arrest him," he said.

This dramatic turn of events comes after the EFCC filed N84 billion money laundering charges against Yahaya Bello and others.

Bello's arraignment was initially scheduled for April 18, 2024, on 19-count charges bordering on money laundering.

The EFCC has been working to bring Bello to justice, but the former governor's team claims the commission is fighting political battles instead of focusing on corruption.

As the situation unfolds, it remains crucial to prioritize transparency and accountability in the fight against corruption.
