Tragedy struck at Ebonyi State University (EBSU) as final-year student Favour Ugwuka took her own life after leaving a distressing WhatsApp voice note detailing her mistreatment by a lecturer.

According to reports, Favour was found dead behind her hostel on May 22, 2024, after allegedly ingesting a poisonous substance.

A student in the Department of English and Literary Studies, Favour had passed all her courses except one, which was taught by the lecturer who had allegedly vowed to fail her. Despite paying N130,000 for an extra year, Favour was failed again, leading to her despair.

In the voice note, Favour revealed she was being mistreated due to her non-indigene status and lack of influential connections. She had never received any references until her final year, except from this lecturer. Heartbroken, Favour mentioned she would leave her certificate behind, a poignant testament to her struggles.

A video circulating online shows Favour's mother lamenting and holding the lecturer responsible for her daughter's tragic suicide. The incident has sparked outrage and concern over the treatment of students in Nigerian universities.
