G20 Reaches Common Ground, But Russian Invasion of Ukraine Looms Large:

Leaders of the G20 group of nations have agreed on a joint declaration at their meeting in India, though without explicitly calling out Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

G20 Reaches Common Ground, But Russian Invasion of Ukraine Looms Large:

In the first major point of agreement since the start of the war, the statement said the use of force was "inadmissible," but did not mention Moscow by name.

Ukraine's government said the declaration did not go far enough and failed to "criticise Russia for its actions," while acknowledging it was "a step in the right direction." In addition to the Ukraine crisis, the G20 discussed other pressing issues such as climate change and the debt burden of developing countries.

An announcement by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, that consensus had been reached on the G20 declaration, indicated that there had been last-minute negotiations on the document.

A draft of the declaration obtained by the BBC on Friday had left the paragraph on Ukraine blank, suggesting that the leaders were still working on the wording in the hours leading up to the summit.

It was a sign of the deep divisions within the group, but also the willingness of the member nations to find some common ground.
