Kaduna State Election Petition Tribunal has nullified the election of Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, declaring the election inconclusive.

The tribunal, in its judgment, said that there was over-voting in some local governments and therefore could not declare El-Rufai as the validly elected governor of the state.

The tribunal further directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct fresh elections in the affected local governments, Chikun and Kaduna North, within three months.

The Chairman of the tribunal, Justice A. B. Halilu, who read the judgment, said that El-Rufai's margin of victory in the election was not enough to cancel out the over-voting in the two local governments, hence the need for fresh elections.

The judge said that the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Isah Ashiru, was meritorious and therefore granted the reliefs sought by the petitioners.
