Lagos State Government Denies Minimum Wage Increase Reports

The Lagos State Government has clarified that there has been no increase in the minimum wage, contrary to widespread reports attributed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Gbenga Omotoso, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, made this clarification in a statement on Thursday.

Lagos State Government Denies Minimum Wage Increase Reports

He stated, "The Lagos State Government has not increased the minimum wage, despite some media reports suggesting otherwise, which stemmed from the introduction of Eko Cares - a program aimed at shielding the poor from the impacts of the current economic challenges."

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was inaccurately quoted as announcing a new minimum wage of N70,000. This is incorrect. The Governor actually stated that since January, civil servants have been receiving the N35,000 minimum wage mandated by the Federal Government.

In essence, those earning N35,000 are now earning N70,000. There was no announcement of a new minimum wage of N70,000. Governor Sanwo-Olu stated, "I am confident that very soon we will witness the approval of a new minimum wage for both the Federal and State Governments. Civil servants and all public officers are aware that since January, we have been paying a minimum wage allowance of N35,000, in addition to their previous earnings.

"Those earning between N35,000 and N40,000 are now earning over N70,000. It is crucial for people to understand and for us to clarify this. This government has doubled up its efforts and has not abandoned its citizens."
