The head of the military junta that has ruled Niger since a coup in February has pledged to hand over power to a civilian government within three years.

Military Coup Leader Pledges Democratic Restoration in Niger, but Skepticism Remains:

In a televised address on Monday, Col. Mahamadou Ismaila said the military would help to "restore lasting peace" to the West African nation before stepping aside.

He also promised to hold democratic elections "within a reasonable time frame" and urged the international community to support his government's efforts.

However, critics have questioned whether the military will actually relinquish power within the promised time frame.

Since the coup, which ousted former President Mahamadou Issoufou, the country has faced significant challenges, including a growing insurgency by Islamist militants in the country's north and a severe food crisis caused by drought and insecurity.

In his address, Col. Ismaila acknowledged these challenges and vowed to address them.

He also urged the international community to provide more support to help the country achieve peace and stability.

Despite his promises, it remains to be seen whether the military junta will be able to deliver on its pledges and restore democracy in Niger.
