The medical center that conducted the surgery has announced the unfortunate passing of Lawrence Faucette, a 58-year-old man with terminal heart disease.
Mr. Faucette, who received the world's second genetically-modified pig heart transplant on September20, succumbed to his condition on October30, as stated by the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Due to advanced medical conditions, including peripheral vascular disease, he was not eligible for a human heart transplant. Although the initial transplant showed promising results, signs of rejection emerged in recent days.
Surgeon Bartley P. Griffith, who performed the transplant, expressed his condolences and described Mr. Faucette as a remarkable patient, scientist, Navy veteran, and family man who simply wished for more time with his beloved wife, sons, and family.
