This morning on March 20, members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) staged a protest at the headquarters of the Labour party in the Utako area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Led by Theophilus Ndubuaku, the acting Chairman of the Political Commission of the Congress, the union members demanded the immediate resignation of Julius Abure as the national chairman of the party, citing that his election was not conducted properly.

Ndubuaku contended that the party convention planned by Abure in Umuahia, the capital of Abia state on March 27, is unlawful, as Abure intends to seek re-election as party chairman during the event.

Despite the absence of party officials at the headquarters, the labor leaders have taken over the premises of the party while the Nigeria police force monitors the secretariat to prevent any damage.

The union members, who are still present at the Labour Party headquarters, are chanting songs criticizing Abure and accusing the party chairman of misappropriating funds.
