However, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, announced April 10, 2024, as the official celebration day for Eid-El-Fitr in the country.

This decision was made due to the absence of any reports of sighting of the new moon of Shawwal anywhere in the country on Monday, marking the end of the ongoing holy month of Ramadan.

As a result, Muslim worshippers in the country were required to continue fasting on Tuesday and celebrate Eid on Wednesday.

The Federal Government approved the additional public holiday to celebrate Eid-El-Fitr on Thursday, April 11, 2024.

The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, congratulated the Muslim Ummah for completing a month of spiritual rejuvenation and reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to providing a safe and prosperous Nigeria for all. Saudi Arabia also announced that the crescent of Shawwal had not been sighted, indicating that fasting would continue on Tuesday, with Eid-El-Fitr to be observed on Wednesday, April 10, marking the beginning of the new Islamic month.
