Ogun REC, Niyi Ijalaye, Passes Away Suddenly After INEC Meeting in Abuja

Tragedy struck on Monday evening, August 19, as Barrister Niyi Ijalaye, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ogun State, slumped and died in Abuja.

This occurred shortly after attending a meeting of RECs at the Commission's headquarters.

According to a source who spoke with TVC News, Ijalaye was in high spirits during the meeting, actively participating in discussions on the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, as well as the seven vacant positions in the National and State Assemblies.

"It was a shock to everyone when we heard about his sudden demise," said a colleague who attended the meeting. "He was in good health and showed no signs of distress during the meeting."

INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu presided over the meeting, which was aimed at ensuring the smooth conduct of the upcoming elections.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Barrister Niyi Ijalaye," Yakubu said. "He was a dedicated and hardworking member of the INEC team, and his contributions will be greatly missed."

Ijalaye, an indigene of Ondo State, was a respected figure in the electoral commission and had served as REC in Ogun State with distinction.

"We will investigate the circumstances surrounding his death and ensure that his legacy lives on," Yakubu added.

The sudden passing of Niyi Ijalaye has sent shockwaves through the electoral community, and he will be remembered for his tireless efforts in promoting free and fair elections in Nigeria.
