The Nigeria Police Force has categorically denied a report by Amnesty International alleging that 13 people have died since the commencement of the nationwide protests.

Police Debunks Amnesty International's Claim of 13 Protest-Related Deaths: 'Totally Untrue'

Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, described the claim as "totally untrue" and "misleading".

"We are shocked and disappointed that Amnesty International would publish such a false report," Adejobi said in a statement on Saturday. "Our records show that seven people have died since the protests began, but none of these deaths were caused by gunshots from security personnel."

Adejobi took issue with Amnesty's claim that security personnel had deliberately employed lethal tactics to manage the protests. "This is a gross misrepresentation of the facts," he said. "Our officers have been trained to use non-lethal methods to manage crowds and protect lives."

The police spokesman emphasized that the force is committed to upholding human rights and ensuring the safety of all Nigerians. "We will not condone any actions that violate these principles," he said.

Adejobi called on Amnesty International to retract its report and issue a correction. "We hope that in the future, Amnesty will verify its information before publishing," he said. "We are open to constructive criticism, but we will not stand idly by while our reputation is unfairly maligned."
