SERAP Urges INEC to Prosecute Governors Involved in Electoral Bribery and Offences During 2023 Elections

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, to take immediate action to prosecute state governors and other officials involved in bribery and electoral offences during the 2023 general elections.

SERAP Urges INEC to Prosecute Governors Involved in Electoral Bribery and Offences During 2023 Elections

This demand follows a court ruling delivered on July 18, 2024, by Justice Obiora Atuegwu Egwuatu, which mandates INEC to investigate and address these allegations.

In a letter dated September 28, 2024, and signed by SERAP’s deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization expressed frustration over INEC’s delay in implementing the court's decision.

SERAP stressed that the failure to act on the ruling undermines Nigeria’s electoral process and democratic system.

Highlighting a recent example from the governorship election in Edo state, SERAP criticized INEC for not learning from the numerous documented cases of bribery and violence that plagued the 2023 general elections.

SERAP further emphasized that INEC’s continued inaction not only disrespects the court but also encourages the perpetuation of electoral misconduct.

The letter urged INEC to implement the court’s recommendations within seven days, warning that failure to do so could result in contempt proceedings.

The court had directed INEC to appoint independent counsel to investigate allegations of bribery, vote-buying, and undue influence involving state governors and deputies during the 2023 elections.

It also called for the prosecution of those responsible for electoral violence, as well as the investigation and prosecution of offenders currently in the custody of law enforcement agencies.

SERAP believes that enforcing this ruling will help restore the integrity of Nigeria's electoral and legal systems.
