The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the death of Olafuro Peterside, who was shot by a policeman on Saturday morning in Elekahia, Port Harcourt City Local Government Area.

The victim, a father of three, was out with his family at a bar when the incident occurred.

The two policemen involved in the shooting, who are stationed in Gombe State but were on special duty in Rivers, have been arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for investigation.

The Rivers Police Spokesman said, “Yes, the command is aware of the incident. From the information at my disposal, the man was with his family.

“There was an incident of robbery in the area, so the policemen shot into the air in response to the alarm raised.

“I think a stray bullet hit the man. The officers are from the PMF 43-Squadron, Gombe, but attached to special duty in Rivers State.

The police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, stated that the two defaulting policemen have been taken into custody for interrogation and urged the public to remain calm, stressing that the police were committed to ensuring justice.

She reassured the people of Rivers State of the police's determination to protect lives and property and ensure that everyone abided by the law.

The police commissioner also advised residents to report any suspicious activity or incident to the police.
