This protest occurred during a prolonged power outage that has severely impacted economic and social activities in Adamawa State.

In a statement, Yusuf Mohammed, the Senior Director of Public Affairs, highlighted the students' grievances, emphasizing the human and environmental costs of the extended blackout. The students called on authorities to address the situation, specifically requesting longer hours of power in their residence halls and reading rooms to adequately prepare for exams, as well as more flexibility in their exam schedules.

In response, the University management decided to delay the start of final semester exams by three days. Originally scheduled for Saturday, April 27, the exams will now commence on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. Additionally, the University will temporarily halt regular teaching activities to give students more time to prepare. Furthermore, solar power lighting and cooling systems will be installed in the library complex.

The University management also assured the students of a minimum of five hours of electricity supply until public power is restored. They pledged to continue dialoguing with the elected student representatives, the Student Government Association (SGA). The University President, Dr. DeWayne Frazier, who was in Cairo, Egypt, attending the Association of American Universities and Colleges Overseas International Conference, expressed his goodwill and solidarity with the students.

Senior management staff, including the VP for Finance, Ms. Nnenna Mosugu, Interim Provost Professor Adewale James, Interim Registrar and VP Administration, Mr. Daniel Okereke, and Dean of Student Affairs, Mr. Byron Bullock, received the students. The management commended the students for their responsible conduct and articulate expression of their concerns, urging them to maintain a peaceful approach as the administration is committed to ensuring their well-being.
