The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced it has started restoring the national grid to resume electricity supply, hours after the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) suspended their indefinite strike.

This development follows the labor unions' decision to suspend their strike for one week after renewed commitments from the federal government. TCN stated that power restoration efforts began with the Shiroro Hydropower Substation, which will supply electricity to the Katampe substation. On Monday, TCN confirmed that the nationwide blackout was a result of the labor unions' planned strike.

“At about 3:23 am, TCN commenced grid recovery using the Shiroro Substation to feed the transmission lines supplying bulk electricity to the Katampe Transmission Substation.

However, labor union actions are still hindering full grid recovery nationwide. We will continue efforts to stabilize the grid and restore normal bulk transmission of electricity to distribution load centers across the country,” TCN stated on Monday.

It should be noted that on Monday, the labor unions shut down the national grid to demand the implementation of a new minimum wage. As of the time of this report, electricity distribution companies have yet to fully restore power supply.
