US Supreme Court Upholds Federal Law Restricting Gun Ownership for Domestic Violence Offenders

The court's 8-1 ruling on Friday, June 21, upheld the law as a necessary measure to protect public safety, aligning with the nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation.

The case centered on Zacky Rahimi, who was accused of domestic violence and threatening his girlfriend, leading to a protective order against him.

Despite the order, Rahimi was found in possession of firearms, prompting his guilty plea and subsequent challenge to the federal gun law.

The Supreme Court's decision, written by Chief Justice John Roberts, emphasized that the law does not violate the Second Amendment, as it targets individuals deemed dangerous and violent, posing a credible threat to their intimate partners.

This ruling reverses the 2023 decision by the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals, which had struck down the restraining order ban. The Supreme Court's decision reinforces the importance of prioritizing public safety and preventing gun violence in the context of domestic violence cases.
