In a ruling handed down by the Akwa Ibom State High Court, two brothers, Uduak Udo Umoren and Emmanuel Udo Umoren, were sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of Iboro Akpan Joe, a farmer and trader from Essien Udim Local Government Area.
It was alleged that Joe had accompanied his sister-in-law to her late husband's farm in Adiasim Ikot Ekon, where they were confronted by the defendants.
A fight broke out, during which Joe was shot and killed. The brothers were found guilty of murder and sentenced to death by hanging.
According to court documents, the defendants had accused Joe of trespassing on their family's farmland and demanded compensation for the crops he had damaged.
An argument ensued, and the defendants allegedly attacked Joe, killing him with a machete.
The court heard testimony from witnesses who saw the attack and identified the defendants as the perpetrators.
