The Edo State House of Assembly has impeached the Deputy Governor, Mr. Philip Shaibu. Following this, the Majority Leader, Charity Aiguobarueghan, moved a motion directing Justice Okungbowa to set up a committee to probe the petition against Shaibu.

Shaibu's impeachment is the result of a political deadlock between him and Governor Godwin Obaseki. The two have been in conflict in recent months, mainly over Shaibu's intention to contest the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary.

Obaseki accused Shaibu of planning a "coup" against him, while Shaibu alleged that Obaseki was trying to instigate the Edo State House of Assembly to impeach him.

Shaibu eventually contested the PDP governorship primary and declared himself the winner in a parallel election. However, businessman Asue Ighodalo was later declared the party's flagbearer for the upcoming election.
