President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo of Ghana has officially conferred Ghanaian citizenship upon the renowned musician, Stevie Wonder, during a ceremony at the Jubilee House in Accra.

President Akufo-Addo announced this on his official X account on Tuesday, stating, “By granting Ghanaian citizenship to Stevie Wonder, we not only welcome a cherished son of Africa but also reaffirm our commitment to Pan-Africanism, the global African family, and the immense potential of our continent and its descendants.”

A statement on the president's website further elaborated, “The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has conferred Ghanaian citizenship upon the legendary musician, humanitarian, and global icon, Stevland Hardaway Morris, famously known as Stevie Wonder."

President Akufo-Addo noted that this recognition not only celebrates Wonder's exceptional talent and accomplishments but also acknowledges his strong ties to the African continent and his tireless efforts to foster unity, solidarity, and cultural exchanges among all peoples of African descent.

During the event, Ghana’s Minister for the Interior, Hon. Henry Quartey, commended President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo for spearheading the Year of Return initiative, which has led to 252 individuals from African-American and Caribbean Diasporan Communities being granted Ghanaian citizenship.

Stevie Wonder, a recipient of 25 Grammy Awards with 74 nominations, expressed profound gratitude, joy, and honor for this recognition. He shared his admiration for Ghana's rich culture and warm hospitality, expressing his excitement at now being able to identify as a Ghanaian citizen.
