Nine of the remaining female students who were abducted from the Federal University in Gusau, Zamfara State have been freed. The abduction took place in September 2023 when suspected terrorists raided the off-campus hostels, taking a total of twenty-four students, including three male labourers.

Thirteen victims, including the labourers, were rescued by the Nigerian Army within 72 hours of the incident. The father of one of the remaining captives, Naomi, confirmed the news. The rescued students are currently in the Federal Capital Territory receiving medical treatment.

The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, was reportedly involved in the negotiation process for their release. Some of the released students have been able to speak with their families, providing a sense of hope and relief. Family members of two of the rescued students, Nasira and Zainab, have also confirmed the news.
