The renewed efforts to impeach Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon Philip Shaibu in Edo State are causing a stir, with new reports indicating that this time, the plan may be more than just a rumor.
Speculations have been circulating since Monday that Governor Godwin Obaseki is actively orchestrating the impeachment of his deputy, Shaibu, and these rumors have not been clarified by either the governor or the state house of assembly.
The momentum behind the impeachment plot against Edo's deputy governor Shaibu is growing stronger. A senior official of the house of assembly told reporters on Tuesday that while the initial rumors lacked solidity, the current one holds weight. He emphasized that consequences must be faced for failed coup attempts.
Comrade Collins Idahosa, the governor of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Europe Chapter, cautioned Obaseki against the alleged impeachment plot targeting his deputy, calling it poorly timed. The relationship between Shaibu and Obaseki has been strained since Shaibu raised concerns over the impeachment plot and took legal action against it.
Following the fallout, the governor moved his office from the government house, opted for Zoom attendance at executive meetings, and has not been granted official protocol during public engagements. Shaibu's ambition to succeed his boss, which Obaseki does not support, is seen as his offense.
Despite Obaseki urging Shaibu to temper his aspirations and not disrupt governance, Shaibu pursued his political goals.
Currently, Shaibu is challenging the PDP's February 2024 governorship primary election in court after asserting himself as the authentic candidate in a parallel process.
