Toronto Raptors' Jontay Porter Banned for Life from NBA for Gambling Scandal

The league's decision, issued on Wednesday, April 17, came after an investigation revealed Porter's involvement in a gambling scheme in March that undermined the integrity of NBA competitions.

According to league officials, Porter not only bet on his team to lose but also manipulated his performance to gain an advantage.

Allegations suggest that he shared confidential health information with a known bettor, who then placed an $80,000 wager on Porter "underperforming" in a game against the Sacramento Kings on March 20. The bettor stood to win $1.1 million if successful, but the bet was not paid out due to the suspicious nature of the activity.

During the investigation, it was discovered that Porter had placed at least 13 bets on NBA games while playing for both the Raptors and their G-League affiliate from January to March. He reportedly used an associate's online betting account and made over $20,000 in profits, although none of the bets involved games in which he played.

The NBA stated that they are cooperating with federal authorities in the investigation and are committed to protecting the integrity of the sport. Porter, who started five games for Toronto this season, has been in the league since the 2020-21 season, playing 37 games in his career.
