Chinese man sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of his girlfriend

On March 26, 2024, a Kano State High Court in the north-western region sentenced a Chinese man, Geng Quandong, to death by hanging for the murder of his girlfriend, Ummulkusum Sani Buhari, also known as Ummita.

Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji of the Kano State High Court, located at Miller Road, Bompai, delivered the verdict, finding Quandong guilty of stabbing 23-year-old corps member Ummita to death during an argument at her family's residence on September 16, 2022.

After the incident, Geng fled but was later apprehended by the police and charged. During his trial, Geng admitted to the crime, stating that Ummita's decision to marry someone else had broken his heart, despite his intentions to marry her. He detailed the substantial financial investments he had made in preparation for their wedding, including expensive dresses, 'Asoebi' for her friends, and money for the ceremony.

Geng recounted how he had spent significant sums on Ummita, including buying her a house, a car, and funding her business venture. He also claimed to have given her money for educational purposes and other personal expenses.

The court, having been convinced by the prosecution's evidence, convicted Geng of culpable homicide under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law of Kano State, sentencing him to death by hanging.
