Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has endorsed a new minimum wage of N70,000 for civil servants in the state.

This decision was announced during the commissioning of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) building, named after former Governor Adams Oshiomhole. The increased minimum wage is set to take effect from May 1, 2024.

Obaseki highlighted that his administration had raised the minimum wage from N40,000 to N70,000. He expressed willingness to further augment the wage if the federal minimum wage exceeds N70,000, while awaiting the Federal Government's decision on the matter.

Obaseki also noted the amicable industrial relationship his administration has maintained with the state workforce over his seven and a half years in office. He mentioned that detailed information regarding the new minimum wage will be disclosed to the public on this year's Workers' Day.
