The Academic Staff Union of Universities has issued a nationwide strike threat, citing the Federal Government's failure to appoint Governing Councils for Federal Universities as a major concern.
The union, during a press briefing at the University of Abuja, criticized the perceived indifference of the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government towards academic matters in Nigerian Federal Universities. They also criticized the recent salary increments for professors and other academics, viewing them as potentially reversible wage awards.
Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the union's President, emphasized that they had given the government ample time to address these issues. Furthermore, Osodeke expressed concern over the government's failure to appoint Governing Council members for Federal-owned universities, describing the dissolution of the councils as illegal and contrary to university principles.
The National Universities Commission, following a directive from President Tinubu on June 22, 2023, dissolved the governing councils of all federal universities and boards of other agencies and parastatals in the country.
